How do you decide? I prefer to use a systematic approach. First, think about a few factors such as where do you want to live, where do you hope to ultimately practice, and what you want to learn? |
This is the most important factor in my opinion. Some people want to stay in the same location where they did their residency. If you were able to match internally, this can eliminate the hassle of going through the match. Other factors include a desire to be in a specific state or geographic region. Do you want warm weather? Or do you need to be in the Northeast or in California to be close to family? Is it a big city or a more quiet rural setting that you’re looking for? Where do you ultimately want to practice? |
Many times a fellowship can be a pipeline to getting a job at a local practice or University. If you perform well during your fellowship, you may be asked to stay on as part of the faculty. Or a local private practice group may take note and ask you to join. This is a double-edged sword however, because if you slack off during your fellowship, it may limit your chance of getting invited to stay at that institution. |
