Bilateral CC views demonstrate multiple superficial round, circumscribed masses bilaterally.
WHY IT MATTERS:
In patients with Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), breast cancer may be more difficult to detect by physical exam or conventional mammography due to the presence of cutaneous neurofibromas.
NF1 patients present with multiple oval/round superficial masses with circumscribed borders on mammography. While not usually a diagnostic challenge, if they are extensive they could potentially hide the presence of other benign or malignant neoplastic lesions.
There is some data suggesting that NF1 patients are at an increased risk of developing breast cancer and may qualify for supplemental screening.
