Subareolar Abscess

IMAGING FINDINGS: ​

Ultrasound evaluation of the subareolar region demonstrates a small fluid collection beneath nipple with surrounding hypervascularity.

WHY IT MATTERS:

1. Subareolar abscess is a common type of breast infection which occurs primarily in women who smoke.
2. Often requires antibiotics and percutaneous drainage, sometimes serial drainage procedures.
3. SA abscesses recur often; the full name is Chronic Recurrent Subareolar Abscess.
